The CDL is a dramatic improvement to the Disco 2. It combines well with the traction control. Add a good set of tyres and your Disco will match just about anything out there.
Warning:The early Disco 2 up to about 2002 is vey simple and cheap to retrofit a CDL .(budget R1500) Roundabout 2003 the central diff was changed and retrofitting was more complicated (budget R7000). After 2003 the CDL was standard equipment.
My CDL was installed by Jaba (021 5116271). I believe Da Gama Motors ( 021 7834631) have a conversion kit in stock.

Re: Central Diif Lock

Hi David, I have a 2000 Td5 and enjoyed your remarks concerning the cdl, the guys here in Gauteng quotes me around R3000+ to reconect the cdl wich I felt is a bit steep. I finally saw the lite in the tunnel when reading your mail, fitting around R1500 and phoned jade motors, only to be informed that the exercise will set me back R3500. The amount you are mentioning is it for DIY? If so is there a simple diagram to follow so that one can do it your self?

Re: Central Diif Lock

Sorry AAlwyn - I dont have a simple diagram - but the concept is very simple. Crawl under your Disco an check on the top of the transfer box - there will be a square heade lug that operates the difflock . Any nechanism used simply rotates this lug 90 deg. I know of one guy who uses his son to nip under and turn it with a suitable spanner when needed !You can instal systems of varying complexity - from an electric solenoid which can be imported from England - through a simple rod whih comes in thru the transmission tunnel at floor level , and parallel to the floor (what I use) - to using a spanner boy.Costs then depend on the complexity. Something to remember is that the difflock light circuit will operste automatically (yes it is there) , but if this is activated before the car is started then the TC/ABS system is tripped. It will reset when restarted ,but if you wish to use TC and difflock then start the car before engaging difflock.

Cheers
Dave

Re: Central Diif Lock

Hi David, thanx for the info. I crawled under my landy yesterday looking for the switch but could'nt find it, space is a bit limited under there but my hand could'nt find anything on top of the transfercase. I do see the cable for high and low range and to the right is black plate but nothing else. I know it must be there as the guys from Independant 4x4 said my model is equiped with the difflock. My disco is an auto, does it make any differance? Can you please be a littlie more specific as to where the the switch is, I realy want to try it this weekend and as you said that one guy send his son underneath to turn it on I know I am just looking at the wrong spot. Your help will be much apreciated. Regards Alwyn

Re: Central Diif Lock

Hi AAlwyn
Please check the pics in the Gallery section , in album Tecno Babble. Took them today (22 Feb 2008)and they should help you . Note that while the pics show the connection , you will not see it unless you use a mirror ! I am not sure if the auto has the same difflock system as the manual - but think it probably does . As further help , climb under car , follow the front drive shaft back to the transfer box. Virtually above the universal joint going in to the transfer box is where the actuator is - it is a 4 sided nut (about 10mm) which has to be rotated 90 deg to engage / disengage the CDL. My pictures were taken by holding a digital camera with flash above the transfer box - maybe try that to get a bettere "picture" !
Good Luck
Dave

Re: Central Diif Lock

Morning Dave, I found it and it works like a charm, thanx a million for your help, will ask a friend that is very technical to assist me with the lever. Next question, the 3 amigos that we all sukkel with, is it in anyway possible to reset them without the use of a computer?

Re: Central Diif Lock

If the amigos dont reset when restarting the car then you will probably need a computer. There are no easy tricks . But it could be worth your while checking thru for simple basic problems in the electrics. Check every plug connector and wire that runs to the slabs unit. Unplug the connectors clean and replug.
Check all fuses and relays in the fuse box , in particular those that are associated with the slabs operation.
Sometimes even with the 3 lights on , TC and ABS will work. If this is the case , try replacing and bleeding the brake fluid and finding some way to trigger TC or HDC or ABS . Repeated triggering might just get the system operational again. Also check that the ABS wiring at the wheels is in good shape and clean and firmly plugged in.
Thereafter , I guess you must have it diagnosed and reset by computer.

Good Luck

Dave

Re: Central Diif Lock

Dave the arm on your disco for the cdl, did you make it yourself? If so is it possible to send the specs for me? It will make the project just that much easier.

Re: Central Diif Lock

Hi Alwyn
No didnt do it myself - not particularly good with my hands !
I would first make the short arm that connects to the "spigot" on the transfer box . Then drill hole thru the transmission tunnel - then make up a temporary rod (possibly out of thick wire eg from coat hanger) . Try this out , apply the necessary bends - then make the final rod to match . Bit of trial and error. BTW i have posted another pic on the Gallery , showing a new unmodified spigot. Might help. You ill most likely have to losen / remove the front drive shaft to gain access to the spigot - or open up from above . Have fun
Ps I read a report of someone who used a cable link to the spigot - he was happy with its performance.
Cheers
Dave
PS Google info using Discovery CDL or similar . There is lots of info on the net
